North Stars fly past Red Wings in Weyburn

Feb 23, 2019 | 10:40 AM

The Battlefords North Stars defeated the Weyburn Red Wings 5-1 Friday at Crescent Point Place in Weyburn.

With the victory, the North Stars move just two points back of Humboldt for second in the Global Ag. Risk Solutions Division, while still holding two games in hand on the Broncos.

MacGregor Sinclair opened the scoring with his 26th of the year, just 7:06 into the first.

Coming off a play that saw Stars’ defenseman Ryan Granville launch a stretch-feed catching Owen Lamb at the opposition blue line while the Wings were on a change, Lamb then deflected the puck to open ice to send Sinclair in on goal. Sinclair, snapping the puck home, beat the goaltender clean to supply his team with the all-important first goal of the game; 1-0 Stars.

After just the one goal in the first period, the Stars would add to their lead just 16 seconds into the second frame, with Owen Lamb notching his 25th of the campaign from Sinclair and Buziak, with all three players on the “big line” picking up a point on the marker.

The Stars’ 3-0 goal came courtesy of Ryan Gil’s 17th on the year. A power play marker from Seth Summers and Elijah Loon-Stewardson, it was Loon-Stewardson’s pass from the blue line down low to Gil on the back door that the “California Kid” then tapped home for a three-goal lead.

William Cruise would score before the end of the second, coming off a bizarre sequence that saw Cruise’s shoot-in into the zone deflect off the end boards, off Stars’ goalie Adam Dmyterko and in. The score would remain 3-1 to the end of the second period.

In the third, the North Stars would continue their scoring surge, collecting two more goals from rookies, as Brett Gammer notched his 13th of the season to make it 4-1 before Austin Becker’s tally into the empty net that capped the evening off at 5-1 Battlefords.

North Stars’ goalie, Adam Dmyterko was solid throughout the evening, stopping 21 of the 22 shots he faced for a .955 save percentage in the win.

The North Stars will return to action Saturday night at Affinity Place in Estevan when the team will play the Viterra Division-leading Estevan Bruins.

Fans can catch the action on 1050 CJNB beginning with the Ultra Print Pregame Show at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m. on the Napa North Stars hockey broadcast.
