Chiverton stepping down; councillor position to be added on byelection ballot

Residents of Meadow Lake will not only be voting for a new mayor this September but also another councillor.

At the June 10 city council meeting, acting city clerk Cheryl Dodds informed council Kim Chiverton will resign Aug. 31.

“As councillor Chiverton has given us notice well in advance of any deadlines for the byelection being held September 18, this will not affect the election schedule currently in place,” Dodds said.

Council will motion for a councillor nomination at its next meeting. The call will then be posted and advertised starting June 27.

“The call for nomination for one councillor will indicate the same information as the call for nomination for mayor with nominations being received up to 4 p.m. on August 14,” Dodds said.

Chiverton did not state his reasons for the resignation.

Dodds also announced Richard Levesque is the first to file his nomination papers and will be running for mayor in the upcoming byelection. Levesque is no stranger to the inner workings of Meadow Lake as he worked as the city administrator and the interim city manager. He was also in the running for a city council seat in 2016.

A byelection for the mayor position was called after former mayor Gary Vidal resigned to run as a Conservative Party candidate in the upcoming federal election.
