NITHA declares outbreak over in Sturgeon Lake, new outbreak in Black Lake

Jan 18, 2021 | 1:16 PM

The Northern Inter-Tribal Health Authority (NITHA) is ending the COVID-19 outbreak declared in Sturgeon Lake First Nation on Dec. 30.

Dr. Nnadmdi Ndubuka, a medical health officer with the authority, declared the outbreak over after 28 days had passed from the onset of the last COVID-19 case in the community.

In a media release, the authority stressed this does not mean there are no COVID-19 cases in the community. During the pandemic, community members are urged to continue taking all precautions to prevent spread of the virus.

“COVID-19 is present in Saskatchewan and we all have a responsibility to minimize the spread of the disease. Masking in all indoor public spaces and physical distancing should be done all the time to reduce the spread of COVID-19,” the release said.

Members are urged to continue hand-washing, physical distancing, self-monitoring, and self-isolating to reduce the spread.

In the meantime, NITHA has declared an outbreak in Black Lake after an increase in case numbers. The confirmed cases are linked to mass gatherings and travel outside the community.

Individuals who tested COVID-19 positive had attended a wake/funeral event in Black Lake on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 to 2 when they were likely infectious.

If you have attended this event, you are urged to self-isolate if they had or currently have COVID-19 symptoms.

Symptoms include:

• new or worsening cough
• shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
• temperature equal to or over 38°C
• feeling feverish
• chills
• fatigue or weakness
• muscle or body aches
• new loss of smell or taste
• headache
• gastrointestinal symptoms (abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting)
• feeling very unwell
