Northern pharmacies to be added to vaccination pilot project next week

Select pharmacies in Saskatchewan will begin offering COVID-19 vaccinations through a pilot project that begins April 29.

There are 63 pharmacies in 14 communities participating in the initial pilot. None of them are in northern zones just yet.

In an email to paNOW, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Health said, “While there were no pharmacies from Prince Albert or the north selected in the initial pilot, there are plans to include some pharmacies in those areas beginning next week.”

The closest pharmacies to a northern zone participating in the initial rollout are in Humboldt and Watrous.

The Pfizer vaccine will be used in the small-scale pilot that will refine distribution and vaccination processes. Pharmacies were selected based on a limited number of those doses, shipping and distribution logistics of the vaccines and the pharmacy’s capacity to administer the doses sent to them within five days due to the vaccine needing to be shipped in the thawing state.

Additional pharmacies located in different communities will be added through the second pilot. The ministry said the timing of that will be confirmed based on the arrival of a shipment of Moderna vaccine.

A full list of participating pharmacies can be found here. Residents cannot make vaccination appointments in pharmacies through the Saskatchewan vaccination line. Appointments must be made directly with participating pharmacies, following the age-based sequencing.
