Warm weather coming following rainfall

After a couple of damp days, Northwest Saskatchewan returns to sunny summer skies.

The region saw between 18 and 25 millimetres over the past 48 hours, including an isolated thundershower. Meteorologist Sarah Hoffman said this is pretty typical for that type of system and for this time of the year.

“That’s what we expect to see with an area thunderstorm like that,” she said.

However, Hoffman said it’s too early to tell if that will make enough of a difference in regards to the region’s moisture deficit before hot temperatures return this weekend. The Battlefords are predicted to hit a high of 22 Celsius on Saturday and should see afternoon temps in the low 30s throughout next week. The Canadian Draught Monitor from May 31 identified the province as abnormally dry to an area of moderate drought.

While recent rainfall has alleviated that condition in some capacity, Hoffman said it’s tough to say whether that had any significant impact.

“It’s something that we can look back on at the end of June to compare to what we typically see,” Hoffman said. “But at this time, we can’t say one way or the other.”

The criteria for heat warning will be close in the region, especially heading into Monday, where both the Battlefords and Meadow Lake are expected to reach 31 C. Hoffman said that while it should be a great opportunity to enjoy the weekend, everyone should be very heat aware Monday and Tuesday and make sure to pay attention to the signs in your body.

“So, if you’re starting to feel dizzy, thirsty or anything like that, it’s time to move away from the outdoors and into the shade or [your home],” she said.

According to Environment Canada, the region should remain sunny until at least Wednesday.
