Willow Creek Community Garden receives $14,000 grant from community-focused fund

As life continues to push towards normalcy in Meadow Lake, one local organization is receiving a significant financial boost that offers assistance with the non-profits outlook for the rest of the year.

The Willow Creek Community Garden (WCCG) has been awarded a $14,400 grant from the Community Initiatives Fund (CIF). These grants are awarded to programs across Saskatchewan that contribute to its respective community’s wellbeing.

In a media release, the CIF stated 271 organizations across the province would collectively receive over $2.6-million in funding from applications filed between February and April.

Pat Morley, WCCG Garden Coordinator, said the recent financial contribution would be used to help cover operating costs, keeping the program running for the remainder of the year. She added this would help the WCCG prepare for the return of community events once public health restrictions have been lifted on July 11.

“We’re just really blessed we’ve been getting the CIF grants since 2016, and every year that we’ve continued to get it, we just are amazed that they are so supportive of our community garden,” said Morley.

The CIF stated the Government of Saskatchewan provided the organization with an Emergency Pandemic Response Gaming Grant of $4 million for the 2021-22 fiscal year as the fund is said to be a part of the Saskatchewan Gaming Corporation Act.

The release explained the gesture from the government helps the non-profit cover some of the losses tied to the temporary COVID-19 closures of Casinos Regina and Moose Jaw.

CIF Executive Director Tracey Mann spoke to the impact of community organizations, saying they are “critical contributors” to the wellbeing of the province, its communities, and all residents.

“With the many challenges of the past year, accessibility to those programs and services is especially important, and CIF funding ensures organizations can continue to offer programming in response to community needs,” Mann said.
