AURORA BOREALIS

PHOTOS: Northern Lights dazzle skies over Saskatchewan

The Thanksgiving long weekend ended in spectacular fashion for many in Saskatchewan as the Northern Lights illuminated the night skies.

The phenomenon was captured across North America as strips of green, glowing lights danced across the atmosphere late Monday night.

According to the Canadian Space Agency, the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis as they are also known, is caused when charged particles electrons and protons collide with gases in Earth’s upper atmosphere.

“Those collisions produce tiny flashes that fill the sky with colourful light. As billions of flashes occur in sequence, the auroras appear to move or ‘dance’ in the sky.”

Within minutes, social media users flooded their profiles with pictures and videos of the Northern Lights in different parts of Saskatchewan.

Meteorologist with Environment Canada, Terri Lang, said it truly was a spectacle to see.

“They were visible even down into Seattle. They were widespread and spectacular.”

According to Space Weather Canada, there is a chance the Northern Lights could return Tuesday night and into early Wednesday morning as the Auroral forecast is calling for possible stormy activity in the next 24 hours.
