Two-day rise in temperatures, snowfall not on horizon

There’s a wave of warmth coming back to the Northwest this weekend.

Environment Canada is forecasting temperatures above the seasonal average in several regions of Saskatchewan, which should reverse by Monday. Both the Battlefords and Meadow Lake are predicted to reach 11 Celcius today, with the Battlefords getting to 17 C and 21 C and Meadow Lake expected to hit highs 14 C and 17 C on Saturday and Sunday respectively. Both regions are expecting a mix of sun and cloud, while overnight lows are back up above 0 C on Saturday and Sunday.

Meteorologist Terri Lang said this is definitely warm, but not record breaking, compared to the past few decades.

“Our 30 averages are highs around 11 C and lows around -2 C, so certainly well above average,” she said. This is the time of year, spring and fall, where you can see a big swing in temperature.”

By Monday, the temperature should cool 13 C in the Battlefords and 11 C in Meadow Lake, with the latter facing a possibility of precipitation. Tuesday should have a drop back to single digits in the afternoon.

However, Lang said it’s unlikely to see snowfall hit this particular region anytime soon. Despite the weather system indicating a cold front on Monday, precipitation is likely to fall in the North.

“It’s some wet snow in the north, but unlikely to be anything in the central region,” she said. “Doesn’t look like there’s any weather systems predicting snow [in the Northwest]. Even for Meadow Lake, I think it’s going further north.”

And given this weekend’s forecast, Lang said it’s a great time for residents to get tasks like yard work and tire changes completed.

“It’s about getting that mentality ready,” she said. “When the weather is so nice, nature is giving us this sort of great opportunity to do [these things], so we may as well take advantage.”
