Precipitation expected, road conditions may turn hazardous

Communities in Saskatchewan have more snow and a cold blip in the immediate future.

Flurries are expected in areas like the Battlefords and Meadow Lake late this evening, continuing into Saturday. Environment Canada is showing the Battlefords are hitting a low of -19 Celsius overnight, while Meadow Lake is even colder at -23 C. Around two centimetres of snow could drop and wind chills are expected at around -30 C. The Battlefords forecast has stronger winds, between 20-40 km/h gusts.

This may create hazardous road conditions, with highways already in need of maintenance following freezing rain this week. Highway Hotline has winter conditions for most major roadways, but Maidstone to Lloydminster on Highway 16 is not recommended for travel due to ice.

Saturday, there’s a slow warmup with temperatures creeping back to abnormally high for the seasonal average and more snowfall is expected as well.

The Battlefords has a high of -6 C and a low of -10 C ahead for Saturday with periods of snow throughout the day that could have more than two cm and a risk of freezing rain. The chance of precipitation will continue throughout Sunday where there’s a high of 2 C.

Meadow Lake is forecast to have a colder afternoon on Saturday at -15 C, but should still warm up overnight to -12 C overnight and a high of 1 C on Sunday. Snowfall is expected to total at least two to four cm, plus a slight risk of rain.

Both communities will cool again on Monday, with highs around -15 C, before warming to -3 C on Wednesday. Following all of the cloud cover and precipitation, Tuesday through Thursday are expected to have a mixture of sun and cloud.
