Production slowed down indefinitely at Meadow Lake Mechanical

Feb 11, 2022 | 1:00 PM

Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Inc. will undergo an indefinite production slowdown due to a repeated lack of railway service.

Paper Excellence, the parent manufacturer headquartered in British Columbia, announced the move Friday morning. The Saskatchewan BCTMP mill, which employs 190 people and infuses a reported $1 million daily into Canada’s economy is dependent on CN Rail. Amid supply chian issues, the railway service has failed to transport Meadow Lake’s pulp production to ports for months and the mill has exhausted local storage facilities.

“While we remain committed to servicing our customers’ needs during this slowdown, we are extremely concerned about this railway situation and hope that it can be resolved soon,” Stew Gibson, VP of Operations and Logistics, said in a statement.

Paper Excellence stated plans to return the mill to full production once reliable railway service is reestablished. The B.C. manufacturer operates seven mills in Canada and sports a workforce of more than 2,400.
