More snowfall in the North West region of the province may require

Blowing snow, limited visibility for Battlefords, Meadow Lake areas

Weather conditions continue to drastically shift in Saskatchewan, affecting roads and walkways.

Most of the northwest region saw strong winds and light snow throughout the afternoon, with gusts ranging from 30-60 km/h. While the speed of the winds should slow as the evening progresses, wind chill will creep past -30 C.

Meadow Lake saw a high of -9 C Tuesday afternoon, compared to -7 C in the Battlefords. Both regions saw a steady stream of light snow come down amidst gusting winds, which is not only making visibility poor, but helping to blow snow off of lawns and rooftops onto roads.

Overnight, another temperature drop is ahead, with lows of -25 C and -27 C in the Battlefords and Meadow Lake. What follows is another week with wildly varying temperatures.

Wednesday is expected to reach -18 C in the afternoon, overnight lows in excess of -25 C, just before some light snowfall occurs. Thursday should bring a sharp warmup to highs of -8 C in the Battlefords and -12 C in Meadow Lake, with a strong chance of snow in both areas, before things cool down to -15 C on Friday.

On Saturday, the Battlefords is forecast to reach 3 C, but accompanied by periods of snow or freezing rain that will carry on into Sunday. Meadow Lake will be cooler on Saturday at -11 C, with a few centimetres of snow. Both municipalities should see a low of near -29 C Sunday night, with a predicted high of -18 C to start the next week.

If temperatures near 0 C, then freeze-thaw cycles will occur, continuing unstable road conditions in the region. Continue to monitor for alerts at Environment Canada and Highway Hotline.
