Monkey Pox

First case of monkeypox reported in Saskatchewan

With few details as to where the province has confirmed the first case of monkeypox in Saskatchewan.

Public health said the risk to the population remains low.

“But residents are encouraged to be aware of the symptoms and contact a health care provider if they suspect they may be infected,” Deputy Chief Medical Health Officer Dr. Julie Kryzanowski said.

Authorities would not release any information about the location, gender or age of the infected person to prevent them from being identified.

Monkeypox is rare and does not spread easily.

Spread happens through prolonged face-to-face contact, touching the bodily fluids or lesions of an infected person or by being exposed to contaminated objects like bed linens or clothing.

According to Health Canada, 477 cases have been confirmed so far, including 29 in BC, eight in Albert, 156 in Ontario and 284 in Quebec

People who have recently been in parts of Canada or the world with confirmed cases or been in contact with someone who may have the virus and develop a fever, rash or other symptoms, like swollen lymph nodes, are advised to contact a health care provider immediately or call 911.

The Ministry of Health and Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) has increased surveillance for monkeypox and has alerted health care providers about signs, symptoms and treatment. The province will continue to work with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg to investigate any further potential cases of monkeypox in Saskatchewan.
