Heat warning issued for North Battleford, warm temperatures still hitting Meadow Lake

It’s going to be a hot one for many living in the northwest region of Saskatchewan.

Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a heat warning for communities in and around the Battlefords.

The temperature is expected to hover around 30 degrees, however, there’s a chance it could peak around 35 degrees.

There is good news as Stephen Berg, a meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, told battlefordsNOW this should only last for a short amount of time.

“The temperature should start to drop (Wednesday), highs in the mid to high 20s,” he said. “Looking like it should get into the low 20s for Thursday and Friday before picking back up in the mid-20s by the weekend.”

Despite experiencing similar conditions, Meadow Lake is not under a heat warning. This is because Environment and Climate Change Canada only issues them when a community is set to experience two days and one night of well-above-average temperatures.

“(Monday) Meadow Lake had a high of 26 degrees, so that’s not quite the criteria. It’s just a one-day wonder for them,” said Berg.

The area should see temperatures drop to the low 20s on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, many communities like Meadow Lake and Prince Albert are under special air quality statements.

This is because of smoke blowing in from different wildfires.

“There are all these fires starting from lightning and because of the storminess in Alberta, parts of Northern Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, as well as southeastern B.C. smoke is drifting in from all these areas,” Berg added.

He also explained that as long as these blazes continue to burn, many areas will see these statements pop up from time to time.
