Ice advisory issued for the Battlefords

It’s getting cooler outside and as ice begins to form on the rivers and lakes begin to freeze, an ice advisory has been issued by the City’s Protective Services Director Lindsay Holm.

In a press release, he said that while the river is beginning to freeze, currents are still strong and will “prevent consistent ice formation.”

Given the time of year, the ice isn’t yet thick enough to support a person and according to the Government of Saskatchewan website, people should follow their guidelines regarding proper thickness. Four inches is safe for one person, eight for a snowmobile, and 12 inches or more can support a heavy truck.

The website also recommends people also pay attention to the condition of the ice. Does it look slushy, near flowing water or has thawed and frozen over? Stay clear of the area.
