Two Paradise Hill men charged in copper wire theft

Two men from Paradise Hill are facing charges after an investigation into a copper wire theft earlier this month.

Turtleford RCMP said they first received a report of the incident on Nov. 4 at around 4 a.m. regarding a theft at a work site in Frenchman Butte. Officers began investigating and saw the suspects, and suspect truck, on surveillance video of the crime.

A day later on Nov. 5 at around 7 a.m., RCMP spotted the truck near Paradise Hill and attempted to pull them over. Instead, the suspect vehicle continued, damaging a fence in the process, and eventually came to a stop a short time later.

The driver, who was the lone occupant of the vehicle, fled on foot. Upon searching the truck, officers seized approximately 425 kilograms of copper wire.

With the help of Saskatchewan RCMP’s Police Dog Services, the suspect was quickly found and arrested. The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Justin Moore, has since been charged with two counts each of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000 and mischief under $5,000, and one count each of flight from police, dangerous operation of motor vehicle causing bodily harm, and operation while prohibited.

Moore appeared in Lloydminster Provincial Court on Nov. 13 and was also arrested on warrants from Turtleford RCMP for failing to attend court, mischief under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000.

Continued investigation by the RCMP resulted in officers catching the second suspect in the theft, identified as 25-year-old Levi Morris. He was arrested on the same day as Moore in Paradise Hill.

Morris is charged with theft over $5,000 and mischief over $5,000. He is set to appear in a St. Walburg courtroom on Dec. 17.
