Cheers, applause and greetings are what met newly re-elected Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison as he made his way in to the Bears Den to celebrate the win on April 4.

Harrison said he is very grateful to all of his supporters, and to those who cast a ballot.

“It really is a humbling thing, to now be given the honor to serve a third term in the constituency of Meadow Lake. We’re looking forward to getting back to work,” he said.

“Again, it’s very humbling, I want to thank the individuals who voted, supported, and volunteered with us. We are very thankful and humble and I’m going to continue to work every day to be worthy of the support and trust that’s been imposed on us.”

During the 28-day campaign period, Harrison said there were no curveballs but he was always ready in case one was thrown.

“I always go in to election-day expecting it to be a close election. It’s well known I won this constituency the first time in 2007 by 37 votes and we never take anything for granted, our supporters and volunteers worked really hard during this campaign,” Harrison said.

“I’m going to try, as I always do, to approach this job with an attitude of servanthood and being the best representative I can for the folks in this constituency,” he added.

After an evening celebrating with family and supporters, Harrison is back in Regina on April 5 for meetings.

Harrison, who ran for the SaskParty, defeated NDP candidate Dwayne Lasas by nearly 3,000 votes. The final tally had Harrison with 4309 votes while Lasas had 1411.

Lasas, who was running in his first provincial election said he is very thankful for everyone on his campaign team, his supporters and his family.

“It’s been a wonderful campaign, I’ve had a wonderful team, and I’d like to thank everyone involved, all the volunteers. Although this was my first run at provincial politics, I think it was a good run,” Lasas said.

He added he isn’t sure if he will run in the next provincial election but isn’t ruling it out. For now, Lasas will resume his duties as Vice-Chief on the Meadow Lake Tribal Council effective April 5.

Lasas added he hopes the SaskParty will do well for Saskatchewan and will be interested with following events over the term.

Also on the ballot, Green Party candidate Eric Schalm who finished with 105 votes while Liberal, Eric McCrimmon received 296 votes.

Mayor and Reeve react

Both Meadow Lake mayor and Meadow Lake RM Reeve Roger Zuchotzki said they were pleased with the SaskParty’s re-election.

“Looking at the situation now, I think the people have voted and didn’t want to see what happened in the province of Alberta,” Zuchotzki said. “Mind you, the situation isn’t the same, Saskatchewan’s a little more diversified but I think the people were generally pleased with the government’s management of the province over the last few years and wanted to retain that.”

Vidal echoed Zuchotzki’s statement, and said Meadow Lake has had a good relationship with the SaskParty.

“When you’re getting to be a third term government you tend to sometimes lose some traction and I think the only surprise was seeing how strong the SaskParty was both in our own riding and across the province. If there was any surprise, I think it was just to see how strong it was,” he said.
