Fundraising night on Saturday for Wounded Warriors Weekend

Apr 6, 2016 | 6:26 PM

A Meadow Lake man is pitching in to help veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

Rick Burnett is holding a fundraising for Wounded Warriors Weekend, a non-profit organization supporting veterans. Fundraiser proceeds go towards sending veterans to the yearly Wounded Warriors Weekend retreat in Nipawin in late August.

Burnett said he was talking to a fellow comrade about Wounded Warriors when the fundraising idea came to him.

“I said, jeez, my dad was a WWII vet and suffered from PSTD, he just passed away so I wanted to do something.” His father fought with the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada out of Vancouver.

Burnett first started selling hands in the Co-op grocery store. He sold $600 worth, with all proceeds being presented to the PTSD service dog program.

Now he’s organizing his fundraiser on Saturday, April 9 at the Meadow Lake Civic Centre.

Wounded Warriors Weekend founder Blake Emmons will guest emcee the fundraiser, with WWII, Vietnam, Afghan War and RCMP veterans as special guests.

Veterans will be piped into the ceremony by the Prince Albert Highlanders Pipes and Drums. Area singers Marty Bishop, Lori Church, Lady and Gentleman, Rachel Brooks and Katlin Engalebret will perform.

Doors open at 5 p.m.

Tickets are available at the Co-op grocery story, Meadow Lake Legion or by contacting Burnett directly.
