Kinsmen Club announces guests for annual sportsman’s dinner

The Meadow Lake Kinsmen Club is gearing up for their next fundraising event. The club recently announced its lineup for the annual sportsman’s dinner.

President Evan Haubrich announced this year former NHLer Reggie Leach and former CFLer Dave Ridgway are the guests of honor.

“I’m looking forward to it, hearing their motivational speeches and fun stories from back in the day,” he said.

According to hockeydb.com, Leach was drafted third overall in 1970 by the Boston Bruins and played 13 seasons of professional hockey with Boston, California (no longer in the league), Detroit and, most famously, the Philadelphia Flyers where he won the 1975 Stanley Cup. While Leach has yet to be inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame, he is a member of the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame and the Flyers Hall of Fame.

Haubrich added Leach will be coming back this summer after the sportsman’s dinner to help out with the annual Kings Hockey School which is run by former NHLer D.J King and his brother Dwight who currently plays for the Los Angeles Kings.

According to cflapedia.com, Ridgway was drafted into the CFL by the Montreal Alouettes in 1981 but never played for the team. Instead, he signed as a free agent with the Saskatchewan Roughriders at the start of the 1982 season. Ridgway enjoyed a 14 year career as placekicker making 78 per cent of his field goals. His most famous kick was a 35-yard field goal in the final seconds of the 1989 Grey Cup final, which lifted the Riders to a 43-40 win over the Hamilton Tiger Cats.

Haubrich said each year the sports dinner raises money for a different school in the community. Last year money donated to Lakeview Elementary was used for playground upgrades.

“This year, we are donating to Kopahawakenum School on the Flying Dust First Nation. Next year will be Gateway,” he added.

The June dinner, held in the Civic Centre is being catered by Parkland Hotel. Those interested in attending the dinner, can contact a Kinsmen Club member.
