Meadow Lake Citizens on Patrol looking for members

Apr 21, 2016 | 5:00 PM

While they may not wear capes and masks, the Meadow Lake Citizens on Patrol (COPS) volunteers help their community by providing an extra set of eyes to the RCMP and they are currently looking for members.

Rick Burnett, President of COPS said participants usually drive around on weekends and being a volunteer organization, one can go from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. or the full eight-hour shift until 6 a.m., if they wanted. To help with efforts, Pineridge Ford donated a vehicle to the cause and fuel expenses are within the group’s budget.

“Two of us are in the vehicle and we drive around and report anything suspicious to the RCMP,” Burnett said. “We can’t leave our vehicle; it’s our safety first before anything, but we need to make sure our community is safe,” he said.

With a small amount of members so far, Burnett said COPS will have a booth set up at the April 22 to 25 trade fair in the Meadow Lake and District Arena. Members will be there to answer any questions one may have about the organization while recruiting a few members in the process.

The trade fair is on from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, then Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. Besides a COPS booth, the trade fair also features local businesses and organizations as well as live entertainment throughout the weekend.

Looking past the trade fair, Burnett added COPS will be holding an open house at the Meadow Lake Fire Hall towards the end of May.
