RCMP warning public to stay off oil wells

May 7, 2016 | 8:46 AM

Though warmer weather brings more opportunities for outdoor fun, RCMP is warning people to stay away from oil well sites.

On April 26, Maidstone RCMP learned a well site near Hillmond had been tampered with and one of the main valves had been opened, resulting in spilled oil. Evidence at the scene suggested a party had been held at the site.

Constable Ryan Reid with the Maidstone RCMP Enhanced Policing Unit said these sites are not safe for the average person to be around.

“There’s a reason why the guys who work on well sites are very well equipped. They receive a lot of training when it comes to stuff like H2S gas (Hydrogen sulfide), handling the oil itself. They have special monitors that are connected directly to their employers. People should not be anywhere near these wells unless they’re well equipped and have knowledge of them.”
