M.L. library gearing up for summer reading program

Jun 9, 2016 | 5:00 PM

Staff at the Meadow Lake library are gearing up for the annual summer reading program which includes fun activities, prizes and a science camp.

Programming clerk Tawn Marshall said activities start on Tuesday, July 5 and the Saskatchewan Science Centre will have an outreach camp on July 12.

“Last year we had two young people (from the outreach camp) who came and did a wonderful afternoon. We had 50 kids in our back parking lot and they kept everybody engaged and happy for a solid three hours, it was a great afternoon,” she said.

Marshall added in order to participate in the activities and science camp, families have to come to the library, located on Centre St. and can register as late as Monday, July 4.

Families wishing to participate can pick up an activity bag with books to read and things to do then keep track of all the time spent reading. For those who read the most, prizes can be won including an amazon gift certificate. There will also be a prize spin wheel for some smaller stuff going on throughout the summer such as mini activity camps.

“Parents and definitely teachers are aware of the summer slide where kids lose some of their skills over the summer. I think it’s important both to keep up those skills but also to show kids reading and using your imagination is an ongoing process and not something that belongs just in classrooms,” Marshall said.

Activities depend on which age range children are within but generally the program includes individual and group reading. Registrants will also be doing some cooking, building and other fun activities.

Marshall said she is really looking forward to another year of the summer reading program and added if people are just stopping in and reading on their own or grabbing books for a vacation, staff at the library are happy.

The program runs to Sunday, August 28.
