Door of Hope to hold annual food drive next week

Jun 10, 2016 | 5:00 PM

The annual food drive for Meadow Lake’s Door of Hope is coming up next week but residents don’t need to expect a knock at the door.

Unita Esau, executive director for the charity, said residents fill a grocery bag of non-perishable food items and leave it on their front steps.

“That saves the annoyance factor. When people get home, they’re busy and doing things so this is one less thing to answer. They can do this at their own convenience,” she said adding Door of Hope volunteers will be around to pick up bags around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, June 15.

Recommended items include canned tomatoes, pork and beans, soups, vegetables, and fruits. Other items can include macaroni and cheese, itchy ban noodles and other non-perishable or canned foods which are easy to prepare and make.

Esau added residents don’t have to wait for the annual food drive to donate to the door.

“We have some very good and loyal folks who (donate) on a regular basis and that’s really what keeps us going in between,” she said. “We really appreciate every single donation and we’d like to thank the community of Meadow Lake once again for their amazing generosity that we’ve experienced in the past and we look forward to another successful food drive this summer.”

Generally the food drive brings in between 1,500 and 2,000 lbs of food each year.

Operating in its 25th year, the Door of Hope includes a soup kitchen, food bank, thrift store, and a low-income apartment building.
