M.L. Stampede Week wraps up 96th year

The 96th annual Stampede Week wrapped up over the weekend after entertaining a couple thousand people at its parade and three days’ worth of rodeo action.

Leighton Wood, president of the Meadow Lake Stampede Association said the rodeo ran very smoothly and didn’t have any hiccups.

“We didn’t have a big entry, but with a good sized entry it made for nice performances which weren’t too long for anybody,” he said. “(The rodeo) showed lots of local content and there’s young people getting involved with rodeo and as long as we can keep a hometown rodeo going for them, I think we need to,” he said.

A couple of Meadow Lake hometown boys won big over the June 9 to 11 rodeo including Tyler Wilson who scored a 72-point ride in the saddle bronc event and Pro Bull Riding Association (PBR) rider Cody Coverchuk.

Before all the rodeo events, the annual stampede week kicked off with the parade which saw dozens of businesses, vintage car owners and the Meadow Lake emergency service departments snake through the city’s streets.

“It was amazing. We had a great turnout, I’d like to thank everybody for their hard work and putting floats and entries into the parade,” Wood said. “I’ve had a lot of compliments on the week and I’m very happy with what happened, the weather was very co-operative and it was just an awesome weekend.”

The next rodeo action coming to Meadow Lake will be pony chuck races held July 8 to 10 at the stampede grounds. All proceeds from the gate, 50/50 and dance during the races will go to the Flying Dust Elders Lodge.
