UPDATE: Power back to most customers in M.L. area

Oct 17, 2016 | 9:39 AM

UPDATE: The power is restored for most customers affected by outages in the Meadow Lake area, according to a SaskPower spokesperson.

Jonathan Tremblay said outages along the major transmission line into the area were repaired, which restored power to many customers in Meadow Lake and surrounding communities including Pierceland and Green Lake.

Now, SaskPower is fixing outages on smaller lines caused by trees and branches to restore power in the rest of the area.

Power lines downed by heavy snow are causing power outages in the Meadow Lake area.

SaskPower has been fixing outages since noon Sunday, Oct. 16, according to spokesperson Jonathan Tremblay. He said there is no estimated time for power to be restored yet, because all the downed lines haven’t been located.

“The problem is the weather won’t let up. We’ve had six to eight more inches of heavy, wet snow overnight, those are pulling down lines, but even more difficult is they’re pulling down trees onto lines,” he said. “Some of those are in the middle of wilderness and we need helicopters to patrol, which we can only do now that the sun is up and Meadow Lake area has been out overnight.”

Tremblay said the area of outages extends almost to Saskatchewan’s western border, near Pierceland and east of Meadow Lake to the Green Lake area.

He said SaskPower has received roughly 10,000 calls about outages since noon Sunday.

As soon as all downed lines are located and SaskPower has an estimated time power will be restored, Tremblay said the company will update on Twitter.
