Meadow Lake taking a snow day

Oct 17, 2016 | 11:37 AM

Today brings a whole new meaning to the term Monday blues.

Between Friday, Oct. 14 and Monday, Oct. 17, Meadow Lake received over 30 cm of snow along with an additional few centimetres of rain on Sunday, Oct. 16.

Due to rain and snow, power lines were knocked down, and transformers stopped working causing a power outage which lasted nearly 12 hours. Power was restored in Meadow Lake at roughly 10:30 a.m. after being off since roughly midnight.

With conditions not letting up, highway snow plows did what they could to keep roads clear while city crews cleared Centre St. on Saturday, Oct. 15.

As people woke up this morning, Oct. 17, road conditions caused the majority of Meadow Lake’s businesses to remain closed for the day.

Coincidentally, students in the Northwest School Division didn’t have classes today due to a professional development day.

Currently snow plows are out clearing Meadow Lake’s streets and as that happens, some businesses, such as gas stations and food stores, appear to be opening for the day while others continue with the snow day.

RCMP and fire officials remain on standby.
