M.L. library celebrates 70 years tonight

Oct 19, 2016 | 12:00 PM

Marking its 70th year, staff and board members at the Meadow Lake Library are hosting an evening of memory sharing, tea, and a history in photos this evening.

Library board and staff members are putting the final touches on image displays and videos of different moments which have happened throughout the library’s history.

“We’re hoping there will be a number of people who will come out and be willing to share their own memories of the library,” board chair Kaitlin Harman said. “I think the library’s played a really important role in our community and it’s really grown over the years. It’s involved in so much more than just lending books, they do so many wonderful events in our community for youth and different groups so it’s really become an integral part of our community so I hope people will come out and celebrate that.”

Beginning at 7 p.m. today, Oct. 19, residents are invited to the anniversary event.

Besides photos, past employees are expected to say a few words and share some memories from their time at the library. Individuals involved with the library for decades, people who have played a vital role in the library being what it is today are also expected to share on their experiences.

“It’s moved around the city a bit and been in a few different locations so people who have been around for a long time would have remembered it in very different forms over the years,” Harman said. “Our group is putting together some images from past library functions and showcasing the different buildings that have been in place and key people involved in making the library what it is today.”

Before being where it is now on Centre St. the library used to be in what’s now Investors Group. Before that it was the current chiropractic office on Second St. W., and city hall among other buildings.
