M.L. Broncos team for fundraising efforts

Nov 24, 2016 | 1:00 PM

This evening in Waterhen Lake First Nation, the Meadow Lake Broncos and the Waterhen Senators/Blues are teaming up to fundraise both for the people at home and those in Standing Rock.

At 7 p.m. tonight, Nov. 24, the comprised team of the Senators and Blues will take on the Broncos at the Waterhen arena. Co-organizer of the fundraiser, April Mistickokat said instead of charging for admission all a fan needs is to donate non-perishable food items.

The admission donations, Mistickokat added, are going to the Waterhen Lake Food Bank for its Christmas hampers. Also, Mistickokat partnered with band councillor Blaine Fiddler to get donations for those in Standing Rock during the game.

“There will be a donation bin for the people of Standing Rock. We’re asking for mitts, toques, hats, anything wool, as well as some plastic containers to keep clothing warm and dry,” she said. “I feel like as an Aboriginal person I have to help them instead of just watching the media and doing nothing. I sit at home praying for these people, crying and hoping I can do something.”

In mid-December, Mistickokat and a friend will drive down to Standing Rock to drop off all the donations. She said she hopes to get a truck box and back seat full of stuff to take down. She added monetary donations will be used to purchase blankets and other items from Wal-Mart on their drive down.

“We’re going with our own money, all the donations, the monetary donations, everything will be for the people in Standing Rock,” she said adding she’ll be keeping receipts as proof.

When in Standing Rock, Mistickokat said she wants to get a feel for what’s happening and if it matches what media reflects.

If anybody in Meadow Lake and area has anything to donate they can contact Mistickokat on Facebook

Broncos captain Taylor Arnold said he was in full support of the game.

“It’s a good cause, for food donations, it helps out people who need it,” he said. “It’ll be a fun game, it’ll be a little different atmosphere than playing a senior competitive game and I know a couple guys [are] looking forward to it.”

Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
