M.L. Stampeders win one, lose one in weekend series

Nov 28, 2016 | 11:00 AM

The Meadow Lake Stampeders midget AA hockey club welcomed a couple of the league’s top teams this weekend with the green and white walking away with one win and one loss.

The first game, on Friday Nov. 25 had the 3-6-1-1 Stamps welcome the 6-3-0-1 North East team from the Nipawin area.

The first period was uneventful, no goals were scored and no penalties were called. The second period had quite a bit more action with North East breaking the scoreless game just 18 seconds in. Meadow Lake’s Spencer Morningchild answered and before the period would let out, Brody Swanson added another for the Stamps to head into the locker room up 2-1.

In the third period, once again North East would open the scoring to tie the game. Morningchild netted the answering goal, which turned out to be the game winner. Two minutes later, Geordie Janvier scored an insurance goal for the Stampeders.

Goaltender Landen Couture stopped 46 of 48 shots for the Stampeder victory.

Meadow Lake’s second game, on Saturday Nov. 26, had the defending Centre Four Hockey League champions, the 5-1-0 Humboldt Broncos come for a game.

Opening the scoring was Humboldt’s Damon Vanderlinde who scored roughly eight minutes in. The marker was answered by all-star Morningchild who tied the game with seven minutes in the frame.

The 1-1 score would stand for nearly 20 minutes before the Bronco captain, Morgan Gobeil put his team ahead.

The second period finished 2-1. The Broncos defence was strong; Stampeder players were unable to penetrate the offensive zone to muster a solid shot, and questionable officiating helped end the frame.

In the third period, each team scored again. For Humboldt, the game winning goal came from Gavin Ingram while Meadow Lake’s goal was scored by Ostin Fontaine.

Following the two weekend games, the Stamps record improved to 4-7-1-1, putting them in tenth place out of 15 teams.

The next game action for the Stampeders is Sunday Dec. 4 when the 4-5-1-1 Saskatoon Ice Hawks come to town.

Puck drop is at 3:30 p.m. at the Meadow Lake and District Arena.
