M.L. Stampeders 0-2 over weekend, playoff hopes still alive

Feb 13, 2017 | 4:00 PM

The Meadow Lake Stampeders midget AA hockey team is tied for the final playoff spot in the Centre Four Hockey League (CFHL) following back-to-back losses this past weekend.

Up against two of the league’s best in the Warman Wildcats and Humboldt Broncos, the Stampeders suffered 4-2 and 5-0 losses.

The Stamps got off to a good start in their game versus Warman Feb. 10. After a scoreless first period Meadow Lake was on the board first thanks to Kaleb Brunet. Colby Crawford tied the game for the Wildcats less than 30 seconds later.

Meadow Lake broke the tie in the third period, with a goal by Geordie Janvier.

Leading 2-1, the Stampeders began running into penalty trouble. With 12 minutes left, Conor Klassen took a minor penalty which led to the Wildcats scoring their first power play goal of the night, and tying the game in the process.

With seven minutes to play Janvier took a ten minute misconduct penalty while Klassen again went to the box, this time for four minutes for hooking and unsportsmanlike conduct.

Warman again took advantage and scored on the power play once again.

In the game’s final five minutes Dalton Bill was issued 14 minutes in penalties for a game misconduct and slew footing. The Wildcats again made no mistakes on the power play as the team added insurance to end the game with a final score of 4-2.

Looking for a rebound game, the Stampeders hopped on the bus and headed to Humboldt for the weekend’s second match.

Three minutes into the game, Meadow Lake was once again in the penalty box. Brody Swanson was given a cross-checking penalty which led to the Broncos scoring the first goal of the game.

Humboldt added another late in the first, one in the second and two more in the third to win 5-0.

The Stampeders record fell to 8-16-1-1 with the losses. Sitting with 18 points, Meadow Lake is tied for the 12th and final playoff spot with the Martensville Marauders who have one game remaining. The Midwest Redwings are one point back and have three games remaining while Meadow Lake has two.

Meadow Lake will close out the regular season this weekend in Saskatoon when the team play the Steel and Sabercats Feb. 18 and 19.

Wins would keep the Stampeders playoff hopes alive, but even one loss would likely eliminate them from contention.
