M.L. bullrider participating in Global Cup event in Edmonton

Nov 9, 2017 | 3:43 PM

Meadow Lake’s Cody Coverchuk is used to representing his hometown on the bullriding circuit, but for the next three days, he’ll be part of Team Canada at the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Global Cup in Edmonton.

The competition is hosting bullriders from Canada, the United States, Mexico, Brazil and Australia.

Coverchuk automatically qualified for Team Canada by placing in the top five of the PBR Canada rankings, and will be one of 14 team members participating in events starting tonight (Nov. 9) through to Saturday at Rogers Place.

He said he is filled with a nervous yet enthusiastic energy heading into the event.

“Making the team was the easy part,” he said. “The hard part: just gotta go there and ride. It’s the biggest bullriding Canada’s ever seen and the second biggest competition in the entire world.”

He said this feels like the equivalent to reaching the Olympics in the bullriding world.

“I always wanted to represent my home country and do what I love to do and what I’m good at,” Coverchuk said. “That means a lot to me.”
