Meadow Lake Remembers

Nov 11, 2017 | 3:36 PM

In honour of Remembrance Day, Meadow Lakers remembered and reflected. Hundreds of community members attended the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at the Civic Centre hosted by the Meadow Lake Legion Branch #76.

The two-hour long ceremony featured speeches from local dignitaries including MLA Jeremy Harrison, Meadow Lake Mayor Gary Vidal, and Lee Papineau, the local assistant to Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River MP Georgina Jollibois. Paulette Bement, Zone Commander spoke on behalf of the local Legion and Maj. Peter Eason shared pieces of scripture. Padre Flo Campbell, a 30-year-member of the Legion also offered prayer.

Members of the Meadow Lake RCMP, Fire Department, Emergency Medical Services, Girl Guides and Brownies, Air Cadets, Masonic Lodge, and the Carpenter High School band were also part of the event.

“99 years ago today, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, the guns of the Great War [World War I] went silent,” Harrison said. “The Great War was to be the war to end all wars, but today we know that isn’t true. We remember the sacrifice of the men and women that came before us who fought for our freedoms, the sacrifices of today’s generation, and remember the sacrifices of all who defend us at home.”

Many community organizations, businesses, individuals and families laid wreaths.

The names Meadow Lakers who served and were killed in action were read as well.
