Poachers sought in deer deaths near Dorintosh

Dec 8, 2017 | 9:06 AM

Two different deer were left for dead near Dorintosh outside of Meadow Lake, and local conservation officers are investigating and looking for public assistance to solve the poaching cases.

Both incidents happened in November, the first taking place around Nov. 10. On this date, a buck was found on grid road 622, approximately 25 kilometres west of Dorintosh, shot and left to waste. Exactly a week later, another white-tail buck was found suffering from gunshot wounds on Tower Road northeast of the village.

Rich Hildebrand, Conservation Officer with the Compliance and Education Unit of the Ministry of Environment said these types incidents are unfortunately very common among poachers.

“It’s something we get too many [cases] of,” he said. “Somebody didn’t take the time to do the proper hunting practices. These are not practices that law-abiding hunters do.”

Hildebrand said penalties for these types of cases can vary from a ticket and voluntary fine payment, and if the case goes to court it can be much higher.

“They’ll be looking at charges of unlawful harvest, waste of game, unposted land, each case is going to be a little bit different,” he said.

He said it’s always disappointing to hear of cases like these, as they’re typically driven by greed or carelessness.

“The ministry puts different hunting regulations in place, and they’re all designed to protect and manage our wildlife for sustainability of resources for future generations,” he said. “So when people do these kinds of things, they are taking away from opportunities for legitimate hunters and the general public that just enjoy the wildlife out there.”

Hildebrand encouraged anyone with information regarding either of these cases to contact Turn In Poachers line 1-800-667-7561, dial #5555 from a Sasktel cellphone, or report online at saskatchewan.ca/tip.
