Silvernagle improves to 3-1 at Scotties

The Robyn Silvernagle rink used draw one at the Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts as “learning game,” but it appears the North Battleford foursome took the lesson to heart.

After dropping game one of the Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts Tuesday, the rink has reeled off three wins including two on Wednesday. Prince Albert’s Kara Thevenot, who plays lead for the team, said every member of the rink is finding their game.

“We’re putting our rocks in really great spots, we’re making a lot of team shots and putting pressure on the other side,” Thevenot told northeastNOW.

The Silvernagle rink trailed Candace Chisholm by a pair early before scoring a deuce in the fifth end to tie the contest at 3-3. After a blank end in the sixth, Chisholm scored one in the seventh but Silvernagle also scored a single in the eighth. The Battleford rink took a 6-4 lead, scoring two in the ninth end, but Chisholm forced an extra end with a pair in the tenth. Thevenot said they weren’t worried with playing another end in back-to-back games.

“If you have the hammer going into the extra end, you are still in control so it’s not a big deal,” she said.

In the afternoon draw, the rink’s fourth straight game, they defeated Sherry Anderson 7-4, salting the game away with three shot rocks in the tenth end, improving the team’s record to 3-1. The foursome had the 8 p.m. draw off. Going into draw five, the team would at least be tied for the lead in the round robin standings. Thevenot said they hoped to be among the elite.

“We definitely have worked very hard to be one of the top teams or the top team in Saskatchewan. We feel like we’ve played very good,” she said.

There is no morning draw scheduled for Thursday. In draw six, Silvernagle meets Stephanie Lawton at 2 p.m. Lawton is now 3-2 after three straight wins to start the event in Melfort.
