M.L. man builds unique igloo

A love of building things and a mix of childhood nostalgia motivated Meadow Lake’s Dwayne Voth to build a unique igloo to cap off the winter months.

The local contractor said he used to build igloos in his youth with friends, and got a sudden urge this year to construct one in his yard. He said he watched some different building techniques on YouTube, and the creation took shape from there.

“I got a bunch of small containers, filled them with water and left them outside to freeze,” Voth said. “We put some food colouring in it while they were freezing and made different-coloured blocks.”

He said his family spent some time in the structure over the last couple weeks, watching movies and eating meals inside, but the interesting project also gained a great deal of attention on social media.

“My niece and her friend stayed the night in there one time,” Voth said. “We had a kindergarten class came over. Fourteen kids and three adults were piled inside and had fun checking it out. We got a lot of comments on it, and it’s really neat to see, especially at night when you have a light on in there.”

With the changing weather, the igloo has started to melt, but Voth said if he does it again, he will start a bit earlier in the season so it can be enjoyed a bit longer.

“We tried to make the most of it while we could,” he said.
