Parade celebrates 98 years of M.L. Stampede Week

Jun 5, 2018 | 12:00 PM

A longstanding tradition in Meadow Lake was as bustling as ever in its 98th year.

As a kickoff to a busy week of rodeo, stampede, horse and livestock events, Monday night’s parade was titled ‘From Horses to Horsepower. Co-ordinator Ashley Wood said more than 35 entries were on display.

“It was a really good turnout,” she said. “An hour before it was pouring rain, so we were happy with it.”

She said there was a good mix of businesses, organizations and other groups who took the time to decorate their floats.

As in every year, independent community judges are appointed to assess each float in six different categories. Northland Pioneer Lodge claimed the best overall entry prize, the best business award went to Tolko Meadow Lake OSB Division, and Meadow Lake Light Horse 4-H Club took the best western award. Best youth entry went to the Junior Forest Wardens, best non-profit was claimed by Multiworks Corporation, and best automobile entry went to Eagle Creek GM. The floats were assessed right before the parade started, so those awarded could display their winning ribbons during the event.

Wood said the parade has been the official kickoff to Stampede Week for almost the entire 98-year history of the event.

“It really brings the community together,” Wood said. “It was really good organizing it this year. I’ve enjoyed talking to people and getting things all together.”
