M.L. bull rider excited for hometown event

Jun 6, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Meadow Lake-born professional bull rider Cody Coverchuk said he looks forward to doing what he loves most in front of his hometown crowd.

With it being Stampede Week in the city, the ‘Mayhem in Meadow Lake’ Bull Riders Canada (BRC) event takes place Thursday, June 7 at the Meadow Lake Arena.

Coverchuk had a busy 2018 thus far with the BRC and Professional Bull Riders (PBR) Canada circuits. He’s currently sitting in first place in the BRC and fourth overall in the PBR Canada standings. The 24-year-old has been bull riding for over half his life, and got his start participating in local events in and around the city.

“I love Meadow Lake,” he said. “I don’t get there as much as I would like now but, when I do come home, all my friends and family come out and watch. I’ve done well before there but also gotten wrecked, but overall, I’m hoping for another win in Meadow. Usually I ride pretty good there, must be the hometown atmosphere.”

He gleaned his first 2018 PBR win in May in Swift Current at the Cody Snyder PBR Invitational. He said while it’s been a pretty good season, this recent win helped him feel a bit more confident.

“I’ve gotten second, and top five finishes,” Coverchuk said. “It’s nice to get a win finally in 2018, got the monkey off my back in a way.”

He said even though he’s only three events into the BRC season, he’s happy to be sitting in first place.

After Meadow Lake, Coverchuk heads to Moose Jaw for PBR event on Saturday, June 9 and then rides in Rocky Mountain House the next day.
