Region cleaning up after weekend storm

Jun 11, 2018 | 12:00 PM

The whirr of chainsaws was echoing through the city as Meadow Lakers cleaned up the damage inflicted by wild weekend thunderstorms.

The precipitation started late Saturday evening, causing widespread power outages in the city and the surrounding towns and villages. Power went out just before midnight June 9, and was not restored in the city until just after 7 a.m. June 10.

According to Environment Canada, nearly 20 mm of rain fell in Meadow Lake alone.

The aftermath of the storm was visible on Meadow Lake’s streets, with debris and branches scattered all over the roads. Many residents had trees downed in their yards and city crews were busy Monday morning assessing damage to property. One structure which was hit hard was the tennis court on Seventh Ave. W. City manager Diana Burton said a full report will be discussed at tonight’s council meeting.
