NSRBL wraps up regular season

Jul 10, 2018 | 10:00 AM

After three months of regular season baseball, it’s playoff time in the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League.

The 12-team league concluded its 2018 campaign last night with two games, and both had playoff implications. The Wilkie Brewers lost their game against Unity, dropping them one slot to sixth place, while Unity improved to fifth in the regular season. In the second game of the night, it was the Mervin Flyers playing the role of spoilers, doubling up St. Walburg 8-4 to make St. Walburg slide to eighth.

The first round is now finalized in the playoff picture, as the Lloydminster Twins come in the top spot in the league at 12-4, setting up a date with St. Walburg. The Lloydminster Jays will be taking on the Standard Hill Lakers after the two teams ended up second and seventh respectively. Meadow Lake will be taking on Wilkie, with Meadow Lake holding the home field advantage and the North Battleford Beavers will play at home against the Unity Cardinals.

The regular season saw lots of impressive numbers from players, with Kevin Gerwing leading the way with a .622 batting average and 21 RBIs over 12 games. Sheldon Williamson and Layne Young, from St. Walburg, had the most home runs with three each.

In the pitching department, Owen Hill from the Twins, Cory Wildeman of Unity, and Gavin Wourms of Wilkie all lead the league with four wins each. Brad Holfeld had a 1.31 ERA over six games while sharing the lead in saves with two with Tate Morrell of the Twins.

Yesterday, the teams also submitted their team MVPs for the season. The Wilkie Brewers named Gavin Wourms as their MVP, North Battleford named Darvin Scheidl, Meadow Lake went with Kevin Gerwing, and the Battlefords Trappers selected Gavin Nolin.

The playoffs begin Wednesday in the NSRBL, with the Wilkie Brewers visiting Meadow Lake for game one of their three-game series. They will continue Thursday in Wilkie and, if necessary, will play a third and deciding game Monday back in Meadow Lake.
