Saskatchewan could soon get another new area code

Saskatchewan just started using the 639 area code a little over five years ago, now the province could get another one.

A notice on the Canadian Radio and Television Commission’s (CRTC) website says the 306 and 639 numbers will be exhausted by June 2022, so they’re looking at adding the 474 area code for Saskatchewan.

This new area code is in the planning and consultation stage right now.

A committee is set to be established to look at relief options and meetings will be held about the possible new area code.

The notice of consultation notes that some people may end up having to change their phone numbers, so the public is encouraged to take part in meetings. A date for a public meeting on the subject has not yet been posted.
