Local bull rider sets sights set on a win tonight

Jul 25, 2018 | 12:00 PM

A Meadow Lake bull rider is hoping to take home the crown tonight at the PBR Classic.

Twenty-four-year-old Cody Coverchuk said he is excited to get out and compete tonight.

Coverchuk has been riding bulls for half of his life, and this is his seventh professional year. He told battlefordsNOW what his mindset is coming into the competition.

It`s mental preparation for myself,” he said. “Leading up to the week, the whole week before, it`s all mental for myself. At the time, loose and cool, it`s just another day, it’s my day job.”

Coverchuk has been riding in the classic for three years now. Before that took a lot of time to get to this stage, and he still remembers his introduction into not just riding bulls, but riding a different kind of farm animal.

“My brother (called) me a chicken, and (dared) me to get on a cow one time. We’ve been going ever since. He rode saddle bronc horses, unfortunately he broke his neck and can’t do it anymore, I just progressed. I never thought I`d be riding open bulls, but here we are.”

Going into tonight’s competition, Coverchuk set out a pretty major goal for himself.

“We’re hoping to win, just like any other night,” he said. “I know the bull that I have tonight, he’s a really good one. He won the PBR last week. I`m hoping for good things, and expecting good things.”

The PBR Classic kicks off tonight at 7 p.m. at the North Battleford Civic Centre. All the proceeds will be going to the Battlefords Trade and Education Centre and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
