Youths beat the summer slide with cooking program

Jul 26, 2018 | 2:00 PM

Youths aged 11 to 16 in Meadow Lake are learning life skills to get over the summer slide.

Every summer, the TD Summer Reading Club hosts various activity days. Recently club members gathered together for quick lessons in Spanish, making Mexican folk art, and discussing cuisine from around the world all while making quesadillas.

“I really thought the quesadillas were interesting, and they really did taste good,” Mathew Fillion, a participant, said. “I really want to become a pastry chef.”

This summer, more kids than ever turned up to participate in the Summer Reading Club. Coordinator Tawn Marshall said 137 kids have registered so far, an increase from 91 who attended last year. Aside from participating in various activity days, the club helps participants keep track of all the books they read over the summer months.
