Moe meets Meadow Lakers at premier’s barbecue

Aug 14, 2018 | 11:18 AM

It’s not everyday residents of Meadow Lake get to have a chat with their premier while sharing a burger, but yesterday, nearly 200 people did just that.

Premier Scott Moe, along with Meadow Lake MLA Jeremy Harrison hosted a community barbecue at the PineRidge Ford Ampitheatre at Lion’s Park. Deputy Premier Gordon Wyant and MLA Eric Olauson were also in attendance.

Moe said he’s been hosting similar events across the province to interact with constituents, supporters, and residents. As the MLA for the neighbouring constituency of Rosthern-Shellbrook, he knows the Meadow Lake region well and said he enjoys visiting.

“Really, it’s about engaging with the people we represent,” Moe said. “It’s about having the opportunity to thank the people, not just for their support as the governing party, but to thank them for the guidance that they provide us, through our MLAs and directly to us.”

Moe said the event gave him a chance to get important feedback which he and the MLAs. He said most of those in attendance expressed they were pleased with the direction the province is going, but gave feedback about jobs, forestry, and farming.

“The continued sustainability of our forestry industry is important to people here,” he said. “I think it’s fair to say the outlook looks strong. Not to say we haven’t had headwinds in some of our other natural resources like uranium or potash to the south of us. In general though, people [here] are relatively satisfied. Really what today is about is to encourage them to continue giving us the advice to make decisions on their behalf.”

Harrison said he and Moe have worked alongside one another for years, and said it was a pleasure to have Moe come back to Meadow Lake in his role as premier.

“The premier’s met a lot of these people on a number of occasions before,” Harrison said. “There would be very few other jurisdictions in Canada where you could just show up at a barbecue and chat with the premier. That speaks to the accessibility of this premier, to have that willingness to go out to community barbecues to chat.”
