Conservation officers seeking three poachers in M.L. deer case

Conservation officers in the Meadow Lake area are searching for three suspects who left a deer for dead.

On Sunday, Aug. 5, authorities received word that a white-tail deer was shot on private property four miles north of the Meadow Lake Mechanical Pulp Mill on highway 903. According to a statement from SaskTip, a newer-model red SUV approached the property, which had clear “no hunting” and “no trespassing” signs posted. There were reportedly three individuals involved, one wearing blue coveralls. The vehicle drove up to the deer but did not retrieve it, then left the area heading west on the Meadow River Road.

In a  previous interview with meadowlakeNOW, conservation officer Kevin Harrison said if convicted for these types of acts, poachers could face unlawful hunting fines which are close to $3,000 per animal, and waste-of meat charges can be up to $2,000.

Anyone with information on this incident was encouraged to report it to Turn In Poachers. Each year, the Ministry of Environment receives over 1,000 calls to its Turn In Poacher line, resulting in roughly 1,200 prosecutions, 2,100 written warnings and 3,500 verbal warnings annually.
