More child care spots opening in Sask.

Aug 15, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Beauval is one of five communities benefitting from nearly 450 new licensed child care centre spaces in the province.

The northern community will receive nine spaces, and the remainder of the 447 spots will be dispersed among Saskatoon, Regina, Prince Albert, and Vonda.

This is all thanks to the signing of the Canada-Saskatchewan Early Learning and Child Care Agreement, which will provide nearly $41 million over three years to improve early learning and child care in Saskatchewan.

Gordon Wyant, Saskatchewan’s deputy premier and minister of education, said he was pleased with the announcement, as it will mean increased accessibility.

“This investment provides more child care options to accommodate the diverse needs of Saskatchewan families,” Wyant said.

Jean-Yves Duclos, federal minister of families, children and social development, said the increased number of spots will give children a real chance to succeed in life.

Saskatchewan MP and Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale echoed his fellow minister and said expanding the system will help remove barriers for families to access affordable, high quality, inclusive early learning and child care.

“I’m glad to see our recent $41 million federal investment in Saskatchewan will allow more kids to benefit from learning and child care services in a stimulating environment,” he said.

Funding has been provided for nearly 7,000 spaces since 2007, for a total of more than 17, 000 licensed child care spaces in Saskatchewan.

Beauval is roughly 150 kilometres north of Meadow Lake.
