Pethick wins top outrider nod in CPCA

A Meadow Lake athlete is riding high from a recent award, after receiving the high point outrider nod for the 2018 Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA) season.

Logan Pethick, a 22-year-old from the area found out he won the honour on Sunday at the CPCA Finals in Lloydminster.  He started his outriding career in 2012 when he reached the minimum age requirement of 16-years-old. He said he’s thrilled to have done so well this season.

“It feels great, feels awesome,” Pethick said. “It’s what you work for all summer.”

In chuckwagon racing, an outrider keeps the horses in line before the horn blows to start the race, then accompanies the team around the track. The outrider’s time also matters, and the athletes can be penalized for getting a late start, running too far behind their team, or cutting off another chuckwagon outfit.

Pethick rode for most of the drivers in the CPCA this summer, he said, and attributed his points total to staying focussed as much as possible.

“You try to stay clean for the driver and not take penalties,” Pethick said. “Just try to be consistent all summer long. I outrode for just about anyone and everyone, just because we were short outrider this year.”

After taking an interest in the sport early in life and watching races at Meadow Lake’s stampede grounds for years, he became a barn hand for Ross Fisher.

He hopes 2019 is another awesome year for him.
