Loon Lake’s Dale Mitsuing takes top spot in CPCA

Aug 22, 2018 | 9:22 AM

So far Dale Mitsuing has a record-setting rookie season in the Canadian Professional Chuckwagon Association (CPCA).

This past Sunday, he made history when he became the first rookie driver to ever win the CPCA championship Dash for Cash at the 2018 finals at the Lloyd Exhibition. He won with an overall time of 1:16.65 and his outriders were Darren Mitsuing and Tyson Whitehead.

The long-time outrider made the leap from horse to wagon this year, following the path of both his older brother Devin and their father Ray.

Mitsuing qualified for the finals thanks to a strong season, and was sitting in the top four before heading to the finals. He attributed his success to being dedicated to horse maintenance.

“I work with horses day in, day out,” he said. “There’s a bond, a connection.”

He said he dedicated a great deal to his father who he said is his inspiration.

“Dad’s pretty happy about it, it was all won for him,” Mitsuing said. “My goal moving forward is to make the Calgary Stampede to make waves, and race my dad before his retirement. With winning this Canadian Championship, it’s a bonus.”

He’s been resting the last couple days, recovering from a cold while being overwhelmed by text messages, phone calls and emails from family, friends and fans alike. He said it’s thrilling and surreal.

“It was berserk,” he said. “I had about 200 text messages and missed calls, it’s been a lot to process. It’s part of the moment.”

During the off-season, he plans to shop for horses in British Columbia, and work in Texas over the winter.
