Carpenter High football team kicks off 2018 season with training camp

Aug 30, 2018 | 10:00 AM

With the beginning of the school year comes the beginning of Carpenter High School’s (CHS) Spartans football season.

It’s been a busy week of cardio, safe tackling practices, and practicing plays, and Head Coach Sam Dawson is already feeling optimistic about the team’s prospects for the season, which runs until mid-October. Most of the team’s roster is taking shape, with the exception of a few senior players being busy with their own end-of-summer activities.

“The team is progressing really nicely,” Dawson said. “It’s a good time for us to begin determining roles within the team, and ensure everyone knows their responsibilities. [There is] a lot of interest out of grades 9 and 10, which is great. We’re hoping to see a few more familiar faces out on the field once vacation comes to an end. We won’t really see our full roster until next week.”

He said the overall goal for the team this year is to keep positive. Last season was an up and down one for the squad, who did inch into provincials, but the main focus is staying on task.

“We are always trying to improve and grow as a team, and as individuals,” Dawson said. “It’s usually hard to tell where we stand until a few weeks into the season, so we just try to take a positive outlook into the first few games of the season to see where we stand.”

The season starts early at home for the Spartans, with the team’s home opener next Friday, Sept. 7 against Rosetown Central. The squad then hosts another local game against North Battleford’s John Paul II on Sept. 13 before three weeks on the road. The quick season wraps up with one more home game against Delisle in mid-October. Dawson said fan support always makes a huge impact on team morale.

“It’s always nice to have the community come out and support the team at home games,” he said. “We hope to see everyone out next Friday.”

All games kick off at 4 p.m.
