La Ronge Council allegations received by RCMP and provincial government

Sep 25, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The Ministry of Government Relations has received a letter from former La Ronge Administrator Stephen Conway asking for an investigation into his claimed conduct of members of town council.

Communications Consultant Kathy Goldfinch confirmed Monday the provincial government received the letter, which was also forwarded to larongeNOW and includes five examples of alleged conflicts of interest commit by unnamed councillors. In the letter, Conway stated it is his hope the government will take decisive action against elected officials who exhibited such alleged behaviours and that a clear signal be shown to residents of La Ronge.

“The province respects the autonomy of democratically-elected municipalities and local councils,” Goldfinch wrote in an email to larongeNOW. “It is only in extreme circumstances that the provincial government would insert itself into the affairs of a municipality.”

Goldfinch noted there are several ways in Saskatchewan to submit such complaints such as through The Northern Municipalities Act, 2010, which includes mechanisms for citizens and councillors to raise and address their concerns. Residents are also free to file complaints about the conduct of members of councils with Ombudsman Saskatchewan, she added, an independent and impartial agency that has the authority to investigate complaints and make official recommendations. Lastly, if employees are alleging harassment from their employers, they can contact the Occupational Health and Safety Division of the Saskatchewan Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety.
