Carrot River firefighter recovering from injury

Nov 14, 2018 | 11:16 AM

A firefighter in Carrot River is on the mend after being injured during a weekend call.

“On Sunday, we had a structure fire call out in the R.M. of Moose Range,” Administrator Kevin Trew said. “During that call, one of our firefighters was injured when a piece of the structure released from the remaining structure and fell in his direction.”

Thankfully, the firefighter has returned home, but will not be on active duty for two weeks.

“We’re really excited to announce that our firefighter that was injured is doing OK; is on the mend,” Trew said. “There was no permanent, nothing permanent done, he seems to be recovering and all the tests and everything that we, all the precautionary tests that were done came back good.”

An internal review of the situation is being conducted as per protocol.

“Mostly our investigation is about learning, a learning experience,” Trew said. “Also to ensure the injured person and the family that there’s some learning and that this injury will not go for not, I guess, so that we can make sure that in the future we will try to prevent this from happening again.”

Trew said a report is being put together for both the Carrot River and R.M. of Moose Range councils so they understand exactly what happened, and to prevent this from happening again.

“This incident definitely speaks volumes to the gratitude that we should all, as community members, have for our fire services,” Trew said. “It’s not lost on us that this happened on Remembrance Day, a time when we actually remember people who served for us in the past, and we shouldn’t take for granted the risks our fire service takes for us.”

The structure, which Trew only said was on a residential property, was completely lost to the fire.
