Meadow Lake Air Cadets fundraise for seasonal training

Mar 2, 2020 | 5:06 PM

Meadow Lake Air Cadet Squadron #520 is celebrating 70 years in the community.

Formed on March 2, 1950, Air Cadets are a civilian, non-profit volunteer-led organization in collaboration with the Department of National Defence. The purposes of the league is to advance the education of the Air Cadets and to promote an interest in the Royal Canadian Air Force.

Anetta Paul, Saskatchewan League Director, told meadowlakeNOW the local squadron is hosting its third annual steak night fundraiser to help pay for youth seasonal survival programs.

“They also do range and biathlon programs, so while it’s free at the squadron level, they do have to travel to competitions,” she said.

Paul said the squadron’s first year of fundraising in 2018 was strong, but there was a decline in ticket sales last year.

“The first year in Meadow Lake, we sold 80 steak night tickets and last year we sold 50 so want to get back up there again,” Paul said.

She said the volunteers and parent groups of the squadron raised nearly $1,600 for uniforms and registration.

The current group of local Air Cadets include 15 boys and girls aged 12 to 18. Paul said she and fellow organizers hope to double the number of squadron youth.

Air Cadets give back to the local community during poppy day, tag day and occasionally help out with security duties at the Civic Center.

Limited tickets for the event are $25 each or two for $40

Meadow Lake Air Cadets Steak Night is on March 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Meadow Lake Legion Branch #76.
